Mr. Thapelo Maruatona, also affectionately known as “TT”, is a native of Bobonong. TT started his career as an Enumerator in the Agricultural Statistics Unit at the Ministry of Agriculture in 1979. He was at the Agricultural Statistics Unit until 1982 when he joined the Land Utilisation Division as a Cartographic Assistant in the Ministry of Agriculture. He spent four years at the Land Utilisation Division.
In 1987 Mr. Maruatona packed his bags and headed to the United Kingdom to study for a Diploma in Cartography and Air Survey at Ordnance Survey. After completing his studies in 1988, TT came back home and joined the then Central Statistics Office as a Statistical Officer where he was instrumental in the production of statistical thematic maps as well as playing a pivotal role in the preparation of the 1991 Population and Housing Census. Mr. Maruatona `s quest for learning continued as in 1991 he headed to the Scandinavian country of Denmark to study for a Diploma (Cartographic Technician) at Horsens Polytechnic. From the sub-zero weather conditions in Denmark TT came back to his semi-arid Botswana where he continued to work for the then Central Statistics Office as Statistical Officer, in 1995 lady luck smiled on TT as he was promoted to Senior Statistical Officer where he was given a more significant role being responsible for the CSO cartographic unit.
