Statistics Botswana appoints temporary coordinator

Gaborone – Botswana has managed to carry out the population and housing census every 10 years since 1971 as per statutory requirement of the Census Act Cap 17:02.

Speaking at Ntlo ya Dikgosi meeting, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Kenneth Matambo said recognition of the need to expedite activities leading to the actual counting in August 2021, Statistics Botswana appointed an interim coordinator this month.

Then coordinator, would among others, set-up a fully-fledged population and housing census office. Mr Matambo said the office would be responsible for initiating discussions with key stakeholders within and outside government, including district administration, dikgosi as well as civil society organizations.

He said a synopsis document had also been prepared to outline major milestones of the 2021 population and housing census.

He said the preparatory work for the conduct of the census was expected to commence with the cartographic fieldwork in February 2019.

“This will pave way for other phases such as the pilot census, the main census enumeration, the post enumeration survey and finally dissemination of results,” said Mr Matambo.

He said Botswana was indeed prepared to conduct the 2021Population and Housing Census.

Kgosi Kgomotso Boiditswe had asked the minister to explain how the country was prepared to undertake the 2021 Population and Housing Census.
