Statistics Botswana’s activities of rebasing National Accounts has commenced last year and expected to end by December 2020.
Therefore, National Accounts hired temporary enumerators for conducting mini surveys from June 2020 to September 2020. The mini surveys will be conducted on selected industries being Wholesale & Retail, Manufacturing, Construction and Transport.
The surveys will target mainly large companies in Gaborone, Francistown and few around major villages. The data collected through the special surveys will assist in the production of Supply and Use Tables (SUT) and updating the base year to 2016.
The objective of rebasing Botswana’s national accounts is to take into account changes that happened in the economy after the last rebasing of national accounts estimates. Botswana’s economy has changed in terms of economic structure, consumption pattern, prices of goods and services. It is therefore important to capture all these changes.
During rebasing the following will be covered among others, at the end of the rebasing project the following output are expected;
• Adaptation of the 2008 System of National Accounts (2008 SNA)
• Production of the Supply and Use Tables (SUT)
• Adaptation of International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Rev 4
Data used in the compilation of Statistics comes from different sources including surveys, census and administrative information compiled by different ministries and institutions.
